What up Paper Chasers, it's ur gurl LoudPen with the second half of this week's Musings. This post will be focused on the movie, The Princess and the Frog. All my life, I have been an avid Disney movie watcher. Growing up, the Little Mermaid was my favorite and my sister and I, even had matching Ariel decorations for the room we shared. As you can imagine, I was positively giddly when I heard about the movie, The Princess and the Frog. I knew I was going to go see it. I was supposed to see it with friends, but, I decided to go see it by myself, because, it was a special film to me. I wanted to see the movie alone so I could assess it with no outside influences.
And let me say, Disney did not let me down. As a matter of fact, they did much better than I expected. I thought the movie would be somewhat stereotypical typecasts of Black people & life in New Orleans, but, it was geniunely a well rounded film. Tiana (the Princess & main character) was smart, funny, and she had sass. She wasn't the typical Disney female character, she wasn't the damsel in distress who sat around waiting for her Prince to come save her. She was independent and free-thinking, love & marriage were the furthest things from her mind.
She had her own dreams and goals, and she refused to settle for less. Therefore, when the Prince Naveen was introduced, they didn't immediately fall in love which was so refreshing to see. It took time, effort, and compromise for them both. Basically, they had to accept each other's differences and learn to love one another. Prince Naveen grew up spoiled & rich, and Tiana didn't so needless to say they had different philosophies. However, they both taught each other something and so they were able to find a common ground which is why they fell in love.
Support characters were hilarious, my favorites were the lighting bug, the alligator, Charlotte, and Mama Odie. These characters each added the comedic element to the film. Also, the animation was amazing. Every scene was well-drawn and it all looked very real. I could just imagine New Orleans really looking that way at that period of time. In essence, this film gets two thumbs up from me. It seems that Disney is moving away from stereotypes and trying to include those who are "different", maybe that change Obama was talking about is coming. It's not gonna happen overnight, because, it didn't start overnight. But, I feel it brewing.
And there it is. This is the pen and these are my Musings.
